Sebastian Breuing has proven himself to be a performer of great artistic and stylistic versatility, and in recent years has been equally in demand as a conductor, choral director, opera coach, and pianist.
Breuing studied conducting with an emphasis on choral directing in Cologne with Marcus Creed, and acted as Creed’s assistant for many years. Breuing’s repertoire encompasses choral literature from the Renaissance to the Modern era, and he focuses especially on the music of the Baroque and Baroque performance practice. He regularly appears as a pianist and conductor with the radio choirs of NDR, WDR, and MDR, the SWR Vocal Ensemble of Stuttgart, the Zurich Singakademie, and the ChorWerk Ruhr.
Breuing has dedicated himself to opera since his student years and has appeared at various national and international music festivals such as the Opera Festival in Aix-en-Provence, the Ruhrtriennale, the Handel Festival in Halle, Gotha’s Ekhof Festival, the Early Music Festival in Herne, as well as theatres in Bonn, Münster, and Oldenburg. He has worked with many well-known conductors, composers, and directors, including Louis Langrée, Peter Sellars, Thomas Hengelbrock, Christoph Eschenbach, Sylvain Cambreling, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Hans Zender, Heiner Goebbels, and René Jacobs.
Along with conducting, Breuing is also heavily involved with vocal coaching and lied accompanying, giving concerts and masterclasses both in Germany and abroad. Highlights include his work with performers and teachers such as Christoph Prégardien, Ingeborg Danz, Jan Hammar, and Helmut Deutsch.
Sebastian Breuing holds a position as instructor of correpetition at the University of Music in Nuremburg.
