The John Sheppard Ensemble Freiburg was established in 1995 by Johannes Tolle, and has been under the leadership of Bernhard Schmidt since January 2013. The approximately 35 singers develop sophisticated vocal music in weekly rehearsals. Most members of the Ensemble are laypersons with several years of singing lessons. In addition to ambitious passion for music and a penchant for unconventional projects, they are endowed with the willingness to consistently develop and coordinate their musical abilities. Regular concert invitations, for example to Stuttgart (“Hour of Church Music” in the Collegiate Church) or France (Les Dominicains Guebwiller), collaborations with festivals (e.g. Stimmen Lörrach), second prize at the regional choir competitions in 2005, 2013 and 2017 as well as participation “with excellent success” at the German Choir Competition in May 2018 in Freiburg document the quality of the Ensemble.
