The Freiburg Cathedral Girls’ Choir was founded in 1973 by prelate Dr. Raimund Hug, who at that time was the music dirctor at the Cathedral. Since then, the choir has been an important musical part of regular worship at the Cathedral, participating in the Chapter High Mass as well as the Pontifical High Mass. Since 2003, the responsibility of leading the choir has fallen to Martina van Lengerich, the current music director.
Their repertoire ranges from Gregorian Chant to contemporary works, and along with singing in worship services the choir also gives concerts throughout Germany. In addition, they perform abroad on a regular basis and have appeared in important churches, cathedrals, and concert halls in Russia, Canada, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, France, and the United States (including St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York and Overture Hall in Madison, Wisconsin).
During the 2009/2010 season, the Freiburg Cathedral Girls’ Choir won first place in the Baden Choral Competition and the Regional Choral Competition. They also placed first in the 13-and-under category at the Eighth German Choral Competition in Dortmund. In April 2014 the choir captured the gold medal at the Twentififth International Choral Competition in Verona as well as the prize for the compulsory work in the women’s choir category.
The choir records radio and television broadcasts, premieres new works, and appears on CD recordings. A special highlight was the opportunity to sing in the presence of Pope Benedict XVI, an event that took place in Freiburg in 2011 before a live audience of 100 000 people and was televised internationally.
