in Herzogenburg, Austria
This music on this recording occupies a special place in the repertoire of our label, for the works in question consist mainly of forgotten treasures from the monastic tradition. Together with cantus et musica freiburg, Dr. Raimund Hug, director of music at the Freiburg Cathedral, has uncovered long-lost works in the Augustinian Monastery in Herzogenberg, in Lower Austria. Among the most significant discoveries are works by Georg Donbergers, who was active in Herzogenburg after 1728. From among the manuscripts, works have been chosen for this recording which show the musical range, variety of form, and the main theological emphases found in the composer’s output. In addition to Donbergers, works by two of his students are also introduced: Franz Joseph Aumann and Joseph Krottendorfer.
