Missa Solemnis “Tu Es Petrus”

or choir, orchestra and organ
By Wolfgang Seifen

Dedicated to Pope Benedict XVI.

The Missa Solemnis Tu es Petrus by Wolfgang Seifen is set for four- to eight-voice mixed chorus, full orchestra, and organ. It was written in 2006 as a commissioned work celebrating the eightieth birthday of Pope Benedict XVI on April 16, 2007. According to the latest research, commissioned works celebrating various popes have a 500-year history. Tu es Petrus was performed at a papal Celebratory Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome on October 10, 2007, in the presence of the Holy Father himself. The Holy Mass opened the Festival Internazionale di Musica e Arte Sacra, an event which was dedicated to the eightieth birthday of the pope.

“When I look back at my life, I thank God that he has given me music. It has constantly provided consolation and joy on my life’s journey.”
Pope Benedict XVI.

Kirche + Leben writes: “It is a powerful work, rousing and disturbing. It gives one goosebumps…”
