FRANZISKA FINCKH – GAMBA

Every Saturday Monsieur Demachy invited people to his house to listen as he showed them the proper way to play the viola da gamba. Franziska Finckh has now unraveled four of his solo suites and invites us to go with her on a fascinating journey back to the France of Louis XIV.

Artist

Franziska Finckh

Franziska Finckh studied viola da gamba with Pere Pos at the Staatlichen Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe, where she completed her Diplom degree with distinction. She continued her training in Basel with Paolo Pandolfo (viola da gamba) and Christophe Coin (Baroque cello), and earned her soloist diploma from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in 2000.
Franziska Finckh has won several competitions including the Förderpreis beim Kulturkreis des BDI (Bund der Deutschen Industrie) in 1999, and the scholarship for music from the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg. As a violist and cellist, she plays in numerous ensembles including the Karlsruher Barockorchester, Gli Scarlattisti, Concerto Vocale, the Händelsolisten Karlsruhe, Saarländisches Staatstheater and Staatstheater Stuttgart. She has played under conductors such as Attilio Cremonesi, Jordi Savall, René Jacobs, Helmuth Rilling, Konrad Junghänel, and Benjamin Bayle. Concert tours have taken her throughout Europe and to the United States. An important component in her artistic endeavours is collaborating with singers in opera and church music, including -Miriam Feuersinger, Franz Vitzthum, Cyril Auvity, and Diana Haller. Finckh also performs regularly with the viol quartet Les Escapades.
Franziska Finckh teaches a viol class at the Conservatoire de Musique and at the Académie supérieure (Haute Ecole des Arts du Rhin) in Strasbourg and is a cello instructor at the Musik- und Kunstschule Bruchsal. She also regularly gives courses for viol consort. She has made recordings for various labels including Carus Verlag, Salto Records, Chrismon, Organum Classics, and Christophorus.
Franziska Finckh is very enthusiastic about her ongoing dedication to French Baroque music, including works by Marin Marais, Francois Couperin, and Jean Philippe Rameau. With the Ensemble La Beata Olanda, she has made the first recording of all the violin sonatas by Elisabeth Jaquet de la Guerre for Salto Records. Her intensive involvement with Demachy’s Pieces de violles from 1685 was accomplished with the financial support of Neustart Kultur des Deutschen Musikrates. It has led to many concert opportunities, the publication of the complete score of all eight suites by Güntersberg (G400), and the present recording of all four tablature suites in cooperation with SWR.
Franziska Finckh plays a seven-string bass viol by Christian Brosse, made in 1995.  It is a copy of a French model by Nicolas Bertrand.
